Nutrition - About Curcumin
Lots of women with ovarian cancer ask me about my nutritional program, since I am a pharmacist and have nutritional training and experience. I use and recommend products that have research to support their usefulness or potential usefulness for various aspects of combating cancer and/or treatment side effects.
Curcumin is a turmeric derivative that is being tested at MD Anderson in Texas for its anti-inflammatory properties that appear to make it very effective in creating a hostile environment in the body for cancer. Inflammation is one of the most potent factors known for cancer cell growth. I remind people frequently that we do not know of anything that cures cancer. It is the environment in our bodies that allows it to grow, and only by changing that environment can we hope to stop the growth. In addition to its anti-inflammatory activity, curcumin studies indicate the ability to make cancer cells more sensitive to chemotherapy and radiation therapy while protecting normal cells from damage.
A form of curcumin is being tested at MD Anderson. There is science there for any who are interested, and a good explanation of the rationale for choosing the blend of curcuminoids in the C3 Complex. According to one of the researchers, BB Aggrawal, PhD, earlier human studies have established a potential therapeutic dose of between 1 and 8 grams per day of curcuminoids, with no toxicity seen up to 10 grams per day. This article abstract explains the proposed mechanism of curcuminoids.
Designs for Health is the nutritional supplement distributor of the most potent curcuminoid product, with 95% curcuminoids in each 400mg capsule, which means three capsules daily will provide about 1000mg. This is the product I use.
